  • New Market Report - Norway Expand Minimize Rystad Energy for the Arctic and Cold Climate Solutions project, 8 March 2018

Project members can contact Thor Christian Andvik (thor.christian.andvik@intsok.com) to access the reports.

Market report from Rystad Energy giving both the overview and the details on the current state and proposed developments in the Norwegian offshore market (Market Overview, Exploration & seismic, Infrastructure, Production & Development, Upstream Expenditure, Main Arctic challenges, Arctic projects and their technology needs).
The Norwegian Arctic, and especially the Barents Sea, has seen a great number of new discoveries over the past five years. Eleven years after the Goliat discovery, exploration results started to improve again with the discovery of Johan Castberg in 2011. Furthermore, in 2013, OMV discovered Wisting Central, while Lundin discovered Gohta. Combined, the total discovered resources for 2013 were just below 0.5 billion boe, making the Barents Sea the province in Norway with the highest discovered resources in 2013. The Barents Sea was also the leading Norwegian exploration province in 2014, as Lundin made the Alta discovery, while OMV discovered Hanssen. However, during the past two years, exploration results in the Barents Sea have been relatively disappointing despite an all-time high of spudded wells in 2017. Still, exploration activity is expected to be high in both 2018 and 2019.

In terms of production, the Norwegian Arctic is expected to grow considerably. The first growth phase is 2016-2019, with Goliat ramping up and Aasta Hansteen being put on stream. The next growth phase will be in the beginning of the next decade. With the anticipated startup of Johan Castberg, Wisting and Alta/Gohta, total Norwegian Arctic production should exceed 600 kboe/d. This is about five times higher than current production.
