Solar energy

15 May 2018

Market: Norway

Location: Multiconsult HQ, Nedre Skøyen vei 2, 0276 Oslo

70 representatives of the Norwegian solar energy cluster met at the HQ of Multiconsult to discuss challenges and opportunities in the African solar market at this year´s International Solar Day organised by Norwegian Energy Partners in collaboration with Solar Cluster Norway 2018.

The Norwegian Minister of International Development Nikolai Astrup stressed the need for the private and public sectors to work in a concerted action in its efforts to get access to reliable sources of electricity in Africa.

It was concluded that the mitigation of risks and funding costs were challenges emphasised by Norwegian companies operating in various African markets. The number of initiatives spread on a large number of countries was of concern and a concerted action by the government to focus Norwegian activities to a few countries with a programme to reduce risks for Norwegian companies looking for opportunities in African regions would be supporting the industry.

During the day, lessons learned from distributed solutions, microgrid systems and larger solar energy projects and even floating and offshore solar were adding to the knowledge sharing.

The following questions were elaborated:

  • What are the lessons learned in selected markets in Africa?
  • What can we learn from other countries?
  • What can we do as a nation to mitigate risks?
  • Which markets should we define as priority markets?
  • How can we make profitable projects in Africa ?
