The reasons are, of course, many. The main ones are the availability of natural gas that is comparatively inexpensive, and that natural gas is the least dirty fossil fuel. The latter has become more and more of a driver lately.
The war in Ukraine has accelerated this development. The Biden administration has, until now, lumped natural gas projects in with oil and other fossil fuels. Recently, the tone toward LNG projects has been warming as Europe grows more desperate to replace Russian gas and LNG companies step up to the plate. The European Union, too, backpedaled its position on natural gas by reclassifying natural gas as a “green energy” as the crisis began.
