View benefitsNorwegian industry leader Alf Bjørseth was initiating solar wafer manufacturing in Norway already in the mid-nineties. Scanwafer, later turned REC, was an early manufacturer of modern high quality solar wafers. It was an inspiration to other wafer manufacturers around the world. Later, more wafer fabrication is established in Norway, sustainable, based on clean electricity and cold water availability. Norwegian solar industry is thus a result of metallurgical competence and Norwegian suppliers of raw material to the industry are highly innovative and driving new technological developments. In addition, early industrial profits have been reinvested in the construction of solar parks on a global scale. Scatec, the 10th largest developer of solar energy parks and Equinor, the state owned oil and gas E&P company, have developed solid pipelines of solar projects around the world. In addition, Aker has bought into solar pipelines and other initiatives have followed, including Otovo, a supplier of home roof data driven solar applications in Europe and South America. The Norwegian manufacturers and developers are drawing on Norwegian expertise in project management, financing and technology as well as data driven predictive operations and maintenance procedures based on the managerial and engineering skills from the highly innovative Norwegian energy sector at large. Today, the international Norwegian solar industry spans a number of activities, ranging from a highly specialized and sustainable wafer fabrication to large and specialized global developers of solar projects as well as suppliers of technology and digitalisation tools.
