Moss Maritime has designed several drilling rigs capable of operation in mild ice conditions. Two CS50 arctic units were delivered to Gazflot intended for drilling wells in the Shtokman area. The ice capabilites of the rigs were tested with ice model tests.
Further, the rig "West Alpha" was used in the summer season to drill in the Kara Sea. Evaluations included nonlinear ice-structure interaction to document the capability of the rig to sustain minor ice impact loads. Moss Maritime has also been a preferred contractor for both Shell and Exxon Mobil when passing novel concepts capable of operation in ice conditions.
