NEMS environmental management suite

NEMS provides the environmental data management platform used by the majority of operators in the North Sea, one of the most regulated offshore energy regions in the world. For more than thirty years, NEMS has helped define how environmental impacts from energy operations are measured, managed, and reported. Since 1991, NEMS has worked with the petroleum industry to develop standardized methodologies for quantifying emissions to air and discharges to sea, which remain the foundation of environmental reporting on the Norwegian Continental Shelf today.

At the core of the platform are NEMS Accounter and NEMS Panorama, which together provide a comprehensive system for operational environmental management and ESG reporting. NEMS Accounter captures environmental data directly from operational sources and production systems, creating a bottom-up environmental inventory based on real operational data rather than manual reporting processes. The platform supports environmental management across greenhouse gas emissions including Scope 1, Scope 2 and Scope 3, as well as emissions to air, water streams and discharge to sea, chemical usage and discharges, and waste handling. Through NEMS Panorama, verified operational environmental data flows directly into corporate sustainability reporting aligned with international frameworks such as OGMP, CSRD, GRI, IPIECA and TCFD. Panorama can also be setup to replicate any operational spreadsheets as well as forecasts, equity share reporting and more.

The NEMS platform integrates directly with operational systems such as PDMS and HCA, enabling automated data flows from production allocation and operational databases into environmental reporting workflows. This integration supports automated environmental calculations while ensuring that emissions and discharges are always based on the latest operational data. The system continuously captures and recalculates the most recent 130 days of operational data to account for reallocations and corrections in PDMS or HCA, ensuring emissions inventories remain aligned with finalized production data.

NEMS also enables advanced emissions calculations using gas composition and gas analysis to derive accurate emission factors. This allows operators to calculate emissions based on real operational parameters rather than static emission factors, improving both accuracy and regulatory credibility.

Because environmental data in NEMS is generated directly from operational sources and processed through standardized methodologies, the platform provides full auditability and traceability of environmental data. Every calculation, data source and reporting output can be traced back to its underlying operational inputs. The system is widely used not only by operators but also by independent verifiers and assurance providers during environmental and emissions verification processes, supporting regulatory compliance, internal governance and external ESG disclosures.

NEMS is also the provider of Footprint, the national environmental reporting portal used by operators on the Norwegian Continental Shelf to report environmental data to regulatory authorities. This means the same technology platform used by operators to manage environmental data also forms part of the national environmental reporting infrastructure. This model has helped Norway establish one of the most transparent and trusted environmental reporting systems in the global energy industry.
