When tankers transport LNG, evaporation of the cargo is inevitable. To maintain a low tank pressure, the BOG needs to be managed. The conventional method is to use BOG as fuel, while excessive gas is burned in a GCU, but this releases harmful gases to the environment, and also waste valuable cargo. A more efficient and environmental-friendly way is to reliquefy BOG and return it to the cargo tanks. This way, pressure is maintained within safe limits and loss of cargo is prevented at same time as harmful emissions is minimized.
