Retrieving tubing hangers and internal tree caps across horizontal subsea trees from different OEMs has traditionally required either rig-based intervention or system-specific open-water tools, limiting flexibility on fields with mixed HXT systems and adding cost and complexity, particularly during plug and abandonment campaigns. THOR removes this constraint. As an open-water tool, THOR is deployed on wire and lands on the HXT re-entry hub, with all functions operated by a hotstab from the ROV, eliminating the need for a rig entirely. The tool is configurable to different HXT systems through a quick and easy change-out of the latch body on deck, and at 3,000 kg it is lightweight and easy to handle from a vessel or rig. THOR pulls the tubing hanger with 125 tons of force while protecting seal surfaces throughout the landing, pulling, and recovery operation, and is run through moonpool or overboard with a subsea crane/winch without overpull from the wire. The tool can also be used to pull and install the internal tree cap, giving operators a single tool for multiple retrieval and installation tasks. This cross-system configurability makes THOR particularly well suited to open-water P&A campaigns on fields with multiple HXT systems installed. THOR replaces rig-based and system-specific retrieval methods with a single cross-vendor, open-water tool, giving operators improved safety, lower lifecycle cost, and less reliance on rig time.
