THRET - Tubing Hanger Retrieval

Unique value proposition (UVP)

Retrieving tubing hangers on subsea completions has traditionally relied on a Workover Control System (WOCS) and hydraulic umbilical, exposing operators to loss of control if the umbilical is severed and adding complexity, cost, and red zone exposure to the operation. THRET, removes this dependency entirely. Run on drill pipe, THRET is fully pressure balanced and uses external pressure in the BOP cavity, with closed pipe rams or the annular preventer, to operate at any water depth. The tool latches onto the tubing hanger main body, where an overpull, test verifies proper engagement before pressure is increased to release the tubing hanger from the X-Mas tree in a controlled manner. An integrated function, Emergency Unlatch, allows the tool to release from a stuck tubing hanger by dropping a ball and pressuring up internally, without requiring a separate intervention. THRET delivers a pulling capacity of more than 450 tons on the tubing hanger and completion and more than 170 tons on the lock sleeve, with a 3.5-inch internal diameter that allows circulation and stripping while pulling out of hole, and can be run with an integrated isolation sleeve for additional well control assurance. SDLA certified, THRET minimizes work in the red zone and resets quickly on the rig for the next run. THRET gives operators a proven, reliable alternative to conventional umbilical-based retrieval, reducing rig time, cost, and operational risk.

Key Benefits

  • Eliminating the WOCS and hydraulic umbilical removes umbilical-severance exposure while reducing retrieval complexity, red-zone work, and associated rig time and cost.
  • Drill-pipe deployment with over 450 tonnes of pulling capacity, pressure-balanced operation at any water depth, and circulation through the 3.5-inch bore supports controlled retrieval of demanding subsea completions.
  • Emergency Unlatch, optional isolation-sleeve integration, and rapid rig reset improve well-control assurance and reduce downtime when the tubing hanger is stuck or another run is required.
