Harbor planning in arctic and cold climate areas represents one of Multiconsult’s key areas of expertise, developed over more than 40 years of harbor design and navigation studies. Design and construction of infrastructure in arctic areas possess challenges due to operational issues such as polar lows, snow/icing, permafrost and darkness. Weather protection (winterization measures), heating and logistics are also of importance. Remote locations are also a challenge due to transport time and response time (emergency preparedness). Our experience from numerous onshore projects has formed the basis for cost-effective design and efficient work processes.
